Our brand

Our brand story

Where LSTM has come from, how our brand has evolved, and our vision, mission and values.

Introduction

LSTM was founded in 1898 as the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in the field of tropical medicine. We were originally established to achieve a colonial mission, and over the decades we have evolved and transformed.

Throughout our history we have been at the forefront of many innovations and discoveries, including being the first British recipient of the Nobel Prize for Medicine.

Today, we are widely recognised as a world leading specialist in health related scientific research and education. We have over 600 staff based around the world, including in Global Hubs in Malawi, Kenya and Zimbabwe, and students from over 60 countries.

Equitable partnerships are at the heart of our work, and LSTM has worked with collaborating partners to develop seven principles for equitable research partnerships.

Evolving our brand

2023 was a landmark year for LSTM. Not only did we mark the start of our 125th Anniversary, but it was also the first year of our new University strategy.

In developing the new LSTM Strategy we refreshed our mission, vision and values, following extensive consultation with our staff, students, partners and stakeholders.

During that work, we listened to our community. They told us that they were proud of LSTM’s work and impact, our collective commitment to improve health outcomes for the most disadvantaged communities, and our increasing commitment to embedding equitable practices and partnerships in all that we do.

We heard that our work and our people are well known among those who work with us, but that our “public face” can be confusing, or even invisible, because of the many different projects, units, centres, consortia and departments.

Many people asked us to simplify our external profile and messaging for greater impact, to help us realise our ambitious new strategy. They also wanted us to acknowledge our origins and to shout louder about what we do and the impact we have.

We’ve taken this insight to help us develop a more consistent, high impact and easily recognisable brand to position LSTM well for the future.

We have remained true to our core mission and values and have refreshed our brand narrative to make it easier to understand, to help our community to tell our stories with greater consistency.

But our brand is not fixed. It will evolve, grow and iterate, just as we continue to evolve as a University.

We’ve created a new brand portal which brings together all the tools, templates and assets you might need, and we will update these regularly to help our community to communicate with our key audiences.

Why does our brand matter?
